Soccer: Cahill keeps Everton's unbeaten run going

England

Everton maintained their unbeaten start as they secured a 1-1 draw at Newcastle United yesterday.

Shola Ameobi scored the opener for Newcastle after he sprung Everton's offside trap in the 14th minute. Everton equalised five minutes before halftime through Tim Cahill's header.

Both sides finished with 10 men. Titus Bramble and Everton's Tony Hibbert had second yellow cards.

Portsmouth will dislodge champions Chelsea from top spot if they beat Bolton Wanderers overnight.

France

Lens moved up to third in Ligue 1 with a 1-0 home win over Monaco yesterday. Brazilian forward Jussie scored from the spot.

Champions Olympique Lyon, chasing a sixth successive title, top the standings after a 4-1 win over Lille.

Germany

Nuremberg threw away the chance to move back to the top of the Bundesliga yesterday, poor finishing meaning they had to settle for a 1-1 draw at Energie Cottbus.

Tunisia midfielder Jawhar Mnari fired Nuremberg ahead after 10 minutes but Steffen Baumgart slid in to convert with seven minutes left.

That left Bayern Munich on top of the table after their 2-1 win at home to Alemannia Aachen.

With five games played, Bayern have 10 points and lead Schalke 04, who won 2-0 at home to VfL Wolfsburg, on goals scored.

Hertha Berlin, leaders going into the fifth round of matches, are third after they drew 1-1 at Mainz. Nuremberg and Borussia Moenchengladbach trail the Berlin side on goal difference.

Spain

Atletico Madrid ended Sevilla's perfect start to the season yesterday when Argentina's Maxi Rodriguez struck twice in the last five minutes to give his side a 2-1 win at the Estadio Calderon.

Sevilla took a deserved lead five minutes before halftime through Brazilian midfielder Renato.

There were eight bookings before the break. Sevilla defender Julien Escude was sent off when he picked up another yellow card at the start of the second half and the team was reduced to nine men 20 minutes later after Javi Navarro was sent off for a high challenge on Martin Petrov.

Maxi fired a 20-metre drive past Andres Palop to level in the 85th minute and struck again, this time prodding home from close range after good work from Fernando Torres.
