Crunch time for Oz fans

On the news this morning I heard talk about our Aussie friends still refusing to accept our apples, says Glenis. "We should give out our apples to Aussie supporters at the Rugby World Cup so they may taste what really delicious apples we grow in New Zealand!"

Papal face-lift

A statue of the late Pope John Paul II which some critics have claimed resembles the fascist dictator Benito Mussolini or even a creature from Star Trek, is about to receive some cosmetic surgery. The five-metre bronze monument's abstract rendering of John Paul features a heavy-set head on a minimalist, billowing cloak, intended to symbolise the pontiff's willingness to embrace his flock. But the statue's tent-like form, squashed facial features and bullet-shaped head did not go down well with church or layman. The Vatican's L'Osservatore Romano newspaper tutted that the head was "excessively spherical" and now, four months after it was unveiled, its Italian creator Oliviero Rainaldi has said he is willing to make some alterations.

He says people "misunderstood" his original concept to express John Paul's "openness to the world".
