Police have launched an investigation into a "brazen" sexual assault of a 71-year-old woman in her Palmerston North home last night.
Manawatu Police said a man entered the woman's home in the Fitzroy area of Church St about 6pm.
He allegedly attacked the woman and sexually assaulted her before leaving the property.
The woman immediately called police who quickly attended the scene, Detective Sergeant Gary Milligan said.
"This brazen attack was very distressing for the victim and we are continuing to provide her with the appropriate support."
He said police inquires were ongoing and officers were gathering more information about the offender and whether a vehicle was used.
Police are looking to speak to anyone that saw suspicious activity on Church St yesterday between 5.30pm and 6pm.
