A Rotorua teen took out the top prize in a national competition without even realising he had entered.
Former Rotorua Lakes High School head boy Piwiki Kingi, 17, had his sculpture chosen to be the front cover of the school's 2015 student diary.
Unknown to both the school and Piwiki, the company which makes the diaries, Academic Diaries, hold an annual competition for the school with the best front cover design.
Piwiki's sculpture of a bird, made only from recycled paper, took out first prize winning the unsuspecting teen an iPad mini and the school a laptop.
Piwiki said the win came as a big shock.
"I didn't know how to react when the school contacted me saying I had won. I didn't even know there was a competition to begin with so it was obviously a bit of a shock.
"When I found out I had won an iPad mini as part of the competition, I was even more excited and shocked."
Piwiki said his sculpture was inspired by a character from a PlayStation game.
"I remember working on my concept and in the background my brother was playing PlayStation. I don't remember what the game was but at the time I was captivated by the character and from there I developed the concept for my bird.
"All together the sculpture took about a day and a half of intensive work to complete."
The sculpture was painted red, blue and white to symbolise the elements, he said.
"I liked the idea of the bird being made from water, wind and fire so decided to go with that colour scheme.
"When I found out my sculpture would be the front cover of the school diary this year I was stoked. To be told on top of that, my design was good enough to win a national competition, I couldn't be happier."
