Police are warning locals to be vigilant as they investigate an allegation of sexual assault in Rotorua's Linton Park.
A woman in her 20s reported that she was assaulted around 5am today in the park near Nairn St.
She suffered some injuries and needed hospital treatment.
She told police her attacker was of Maori or Pacific Island descent, approximately mid to late 30s, athletic build and tall, possibly as tall as 6ft 2in. He was wearing a green hoodie, plastic rainproof type pants and white running shoes with a fairly pointed toe. He left the scene in a light-coloured stationwagon, possibly a Toyota, police said.
"Until we identify the offender we ask you to be extra alert and mindful of your personal safety," police said in a statement.
"Avoid walking alone at night and early morning, keep to well-used, well lit areas and walk facing the traffic. Keep mobile phones in easy reach and also keep your keys to hand as they can be useful if you need to defend yourself. If you think you are being followed or are approached the best thing to do is avoid confrontation, walk briskly away, head to the nearest location where there are other people and call 111."
Police ask the public to please report any suspicious behaviour, particularly involving someone fitting this description, by calling 111.
If you know anyone who fits this description with access to a light-coloured stationwagon, or you have any other information that might assist the investigation please call Rotorua police on 07 348 0099. You can also provide information anonymously to the organisation Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
