Increasing cloud and drizzle are expected to hamper tonight's chances of viewing a rare full lunar eclipse.
Starting from 6pm, as the moon rises it will move into the shadow of the Earth cast by the sun. At full eclipse the moon becomes blood red in colour.
Metservice forecaster Mike O'Connor said a north easterly wind would be persistent through the day, "pumping in a lot of moisture".
The drizzle was expected to become worse with increasing cloud and showers this evening about the same time the moon was expected to rise, he said.
"It's not looking great for seeing the eclipse. We have a lot more cloud and drizzle coming in. and it looks like it's becoming more so around that time so you might sneak a peak just before that."
The eclipse will already be underway when the moon rises at 5.41pm but the full eclipse will last for one hour and 15 minutes.
