A Rotorua police officer's car was almost hit by an alleged drink driver he had been sent out to intercept.
Two separate calls had been made about the man's driving on Sunday night. He was alleged to have driven on the wrong side of the road at least three times.
The man was eventually stopped following a pursuit along State Highway 5 around 9pm.
Police Sergeant Pauline Jones said as well as the two calls reporting the man's alleged erratic driving, four other drivers pulled over to see if the officer, who stopped the man, needed help.
The man is alleged to have had about 800 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath. The legal limit is 400.
