A Rotorua skating enthusiast wants to turn one of the large empty shops in Rotorua into a covered skate rink to provide a venue for skate sports as well as other entertainment.
Layla Robinson has resurrected her Facebook campaign and has put her ideas forward to the Rotorua District Council.
She wants an existing building to be converted and for the rink to be available for a variety of community groups. It also has the potential to host national roller derby tournaments.
"Rotorua is such a central place, I don't know why we don't already have one," she said.
"There are so many large empty buildings in Rotorua, maybe we could make that work. Building new stuff is all well and good but using something that's there would be cheaper and makes more sense."
Ms Robinson said skating fashions came and went over the years - rollerskating, rollerblading, scooters - but there were always skaters looking for a venue for their chosen sport or activity.
She said the venue didn't need to be state-of-the-art but could resemble what was available in Hamilton where there was a concrete floor, a roof and meshed windows.
"It's very basic but we'd be happy with that. We'd like it to be closed in and with rental skates - that would be ideal."
She has been in contact with Rotorua Deputy Mayor Dave Donaldson who is leading a council sport and recreation strategy. Mr Donaldson said there were a large number of codes looking for increased facilities and improved access.
"It's still early days," Mr Donaldson said.
"It's too early to say if council will support, and the nature of that support."
He said the strategy was a big project but would not get going until March.
Until then, Ms Robinson wants to hear from organisations who could use a facility such as a covered rink for their own club as well as anyone who can help her with the research and preparation of a plan for the rink. She is also on the lookout for any old roller skate or roller blade gear that can be donated.
