One of the Navy divers who pulled Rob Hewitt from the ocean after more than three days lost at sea, will be in Rotorua this weekend educating local Maori boaties and divers on water safety.
Former Navy diver and Able Seaman Joel Ngatuere is hosting the ActivePost Day Skipper Course (Kia Maanu Kia Ora Maori) water safety education programme in Rotorua this weekend.
There are 25 people aged between 16-35 taking part in the course this weekend.
Mr Ngatuere was in the navy for 12 years and was one of a group of navy divers involved in rescuing Mr Hewitt from the water in 2006 after his epic survival after treading water for 75 hours.
Those taking on the course will hear firsthand about his life in the navy.
