Gargoyle watch

A reader writes: "I'm not sure that burglars read, but, on the off chance ... The people who took the two large gargoyles off my porch in New Lynn yesterday might like to know that each contain the ashes of a much-loved family member. The ashes are mixed with the concrete, so I'm afraid you won't be able to clean them out. We'd very much like them back, please. So if anyone sees two rust-coloured concrete gargoyles crouching with their tails over their arms, please let me know."

'Bribe' offer follows negative feedback

Hugh writes: "My first experience of being offered a bribe from a New Zealand business, [came] after placing negative feedback [online]. The company, which has a nearly 30,000-feedback rating emailed me this: 'As a means of compensation, if you are willing to remove your negative feedback, I can provide you with a $10 Gift Card.' I'm almost tempted to make another purchase so I can place more negative feedback to let people know about the bribery!"

Lion on Tampa menu

A Mexican restaurant in Tampa, Florida, is offering tacos with exotic meats including lion in their "Safari" menu. It also includes bison, shark, ostrich, octopus, alligator, gazelle, rabbit, duck, camel and kangaroo. Even though the animal is in danger of extinction, it is legal to sell and eat lion meat in the United States. Taco Fusion has had to deal with criticism and even threats of violence over the decision. But the restaurant defended itself, writing on its website: "Who decides which animals are worthy? If the argument is that a lion is 'majestic' so you shouldn't breed them for meat consumption - then what is the lesson here? That only the majestic pretty girls get treated well and the ugly ones go to the slaughter pen? How pompous and idiotic does that sound?" the restaurant wrote. "This isn't Cuba; this isn't North Korea; this isn't Stalinist Russia. Just remember: This is America, baby." (Source: Yahoo.com)

Painting fails to disguise cannabis smell

Two men in Edinburgh applied dozens of coats of paint to an empty shop unit in a desperate bid to cover up the smell of their marijuana crop inside. They had 60 plants worth £25,000 growing inside the former estate agents. But the smell of cannabis was wafting into the street so the culprits hatched the unusual plan, spending five hours a day, Monday to Friday, painting and repainting the exterior of the premises. The men's work was undone, however, when police raided the property last week and found the makeshift cannabis factory. (Source: Daily Record)
