The American owner of the station on Young Nick's Head in Poverty Bay, has met local Maori.
The sale of the land to John Griffin sparked controversy last year. Local Maori occupied Young Nick's Head and then marched to Parliament.
This week, Mr Griffin met Ngai Tamanuhiri privately.
Ngai Tamanuhiri Whanui Trust chairman Na Rahania said later that Mr Griffin said his family understood that the issues were with the Government.
"He also talked about his desire to ensure that we work together for the benefit of the land and his desire to have an ongoing and mutually beneficial relationship."
