A woman is in a serious condition after being hit by a car on Moorhouse Ave in Christchurch.
Police say it appears the woman ran out in front of a car, which had a green light on the busy thoroughfare.
The crash happened near the Moorhouse Ave intersection with Madras St about 9.45am today.
Passers-by administered first aid until emergency services arrived, said a police communications spokesman.
"The car had the green light and stopped immediately," said a police spokesman.
The road was closed for a time while police spoke to the driver and witnesses.
Although the road has since re-opened, police are urging drivers to avoid the area if possible.
