The heavy rain that pelted much of the country yesterday is set to ease today - but the respite will be brief.
MetService meteorologist Tui McInnes said a front had moved down the country yesterday and the North Island was now clearing but more showers were coming.
Yesterday's constant rain was expected to give way to showers across much of today in Auckland and most of the North Island. However, the day would remain very wet for the west coast. Almost 40mm of rain is predicted in New Plymouth for the next 24 hours, bringing a moderate risk of thunderstorms and small hail.
"We're already getting a few sparks around the country," he said.
Conditions would continue to feel quite soggy, but it would be a far cry from yesterday when Auckland was drenched with 19.2mm, Whakatane with 28mm and Wellington with 22.6mm.
