Division has arisen over plans to scrap Waitangi Day welcoming ceremonies at Te Tii Marae.
After years of controversy, organisers have decided it's time to stop using Te Tii Marae and instead only use Te Whare Runanga - the upper marae - instead.
Waitangi National Trust chairman Pita Paraone will brief trustees about the decision later today.
Demonstrations at Te Tii Marae have delayed and disrupted ceremonies in recent years.
This year Prime Minister Bill English decided to stay away after confusion about whether he would be allowed to speak, a move Paraone described as the last straw.
But Ngapuhi elder Kingi Taurua said the iwi hadn't been consulted over the proposal, and Paraone was out of line.
He says the issue isn't Paraone's to deal with alone.
Taurua said he would raise his concerns at this morning's marae trustees meeting.
