A Fire Service spokesman said the child was "partially trapped" which indicated it wasn't a serious entrapment.

"...so hopefully not a serious injury."

It took less than an hour for fire crew to free the child, who was taken to Whakatane Hospital with moderate injuries.

A police spokeswoman said initially diversions were in place as ambulance staff worked on a patient - but the road was also reopened within an hour of the crash.

She said one other person had also received moderate injuries.
