Authorities are still searching for a person thought to be missing after they were spotted entering the water at a Dunedin beach this morning.

A member of the public reported seeing a person described as being of small build and wearing loose black clothing at Brighton Beach just after 10.30am.

Police and Brighton Surf Lifesaving staff responded with an inflatable rescue boat, while a helicopter was also called to the scene.

"The [inflatable rescue boat] completed a search of approximately 200m by 200m of the area where the person was last seen, however the IRB returned to the shore due to sea conditions."

A search of the immediate area, where the person was last seen, was carried out by a helicopter. But no one was spotted.

A LandSAR tracking team made up of three searchers has also been deployed and will be searching the coastal areas.

Police are appealing for any members of the public who may have seen this person in the water or exiting the water along the coast to come forward.
