Residents have been allowed to return home after their homes were evacuated when a digger struck a gas main in the Hawke's Bay town of Pahiatua.

Emergency services were called to Kauri Place at 1.37pm after reports of a digger striking a domestic gas main, a Fire Service spokeswoman said.

Ten houses were evacuated as a precaution while crews worked to isolate the leak.

The drama was over shortly afterwards and residents were allowed to return home.
