A two-storey home on the Kapiti Coast has been severely damaged in an early morning blaze.

The Paraparaumu property was engulfed by fire when fire crews arrived at the scene just after 4am, said Fire Service central communications shift manager David Meikle.

"The two-storey house was well alight when they arrived at the Kaimanawa St property," he said.

Four fire crews battled the flames.

Meikle did not know how many people were inside the home at the time the fire broke out but said everyone managed to escape the pre-dawn blaze without injury.

The fire had now been extinguished but crews were expected to remain at the address for most of the day.

A fire investigator was also preparing to go through the damaged home to find out how the fire started.
