An ambulance has rolled after a speeding car crashed into it on a major Auckland suburban street this morning.

The wrecked car and ambulance blocked Mt Albert Rd, which is closed from Hillsborough Rd through to Buckley Rd while police investigate.

Police said the crash happened just after 4am when a car was seen speeding on Mt Albert Rd towards Hillsborough Rd.

Police said the car had only travelled a short distance before the driver crashed into the the ambulance, which rolled.

No one in the ambulance was hurt but firefighters cut the driver out of the car. The person was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

St John northern communications manager Robbie Walker said there were two paramedics travelling in the ambulance at the time of the accident.

They had been left shaken by the ordeal and were now at home recovering.

The Serious Crash Unit is now investigating.
