A speeding car crashed off a Dunedin motorway while its driver was fleeing from police tonight.

Police said the driver failed to stop near the suburb of Caversham and a pursuit was launched about 7pm.

The chase continued for 2km until the fleeing car crashed 20m north of the Abbotsford off-ramp on the Southern Motorway.

One person was taken to hospital and police said the person had since been arrested.

A southbound lane of the motorway would be closed until later tonight while the police serious crash unit investigated.

The incident would be referred to the Independent Police Conduct Authority, as was standard practice in such incidents.
