The body found on the edge of the Waikato River yesterday was that of 77-year-old Hamilton man William Rex Sim.

Police found and removed the body at 11am yesterday near fallen trees on the part of the river which backs on to Jesmond Park in Claudelands.

Mr Sim was reported missing last week.

Police said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding Mr Sim's death and his next of kin had been advised.

"Police would like to thank everyone who assisted in the search for William Rex Sim. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends at this time."

His death has been referred to the Coroner.
