Firefighters are battling a large blaze on State Highway 1 south of Taupo this morning which has claimed three buildings on one property.

Northern fire shift manager Daniel Nicholson said a two-storey house, an adjoining garage and a building in front of the house was well ablaze near Mission Point.

He said the alarm was raised just after 3.50am and fire crews arrived to find the three properties "fully involved in fire".

Three fire crews and a tanker were at the fire and were now trying to stop the fire from spreading to neighbouring properties.

Mr Nicholson said everyone had escaped from the house with no reports of people missing or injured.

The fire was likely to disrupt travel on the main route north and police and highway authorities had been called to help with traffic control.

A fire safety officer had been called to examine the cause of the blaze.
