A New Zealand deportee had only been back in the country less than 24 hours when he lashed out at staff at an Auckland bar before assaulting a woman.
The 28-year-old man was with two other men at a bar in Britomart last Friday night when the incident happened, TVNZ reported tonight.
A woman who was at the bar, 1885 Britomart, said the man had earlier been heard saying he was celebrating his return home, after being deported from Australia the previous day.
The men later argued with bar staff over a drinks tab. Things then turned violent.
She told TVNZ: "They were smashing the window, the big fence and they were trying to get inside to get at the bouncers and [cause] a big fight."
The woman, who was with a friend, went outside to find her - and spotted her speaking with the trio outside the establishment.
As she spoke to her mate, she was attacked.
"All of a sudden, one punched me in the face and I was on the ground. Then next minute, he did the same thing to my friend as well.
"I remember seeing the dude on the ground, handcuffed. They were taken away."
The group were arrested and charged with assault and criminal damage and ordered to pay more than $3,000 in reparation.
