A 70-year-old man was winched to safety after injuring his ankle while tramping in the Ruahine Range in Manawatu.

The Rescue Coordination Centre was alerted after a personal locator beacon was activated near the Ikawetea Forks Hut this morning.

The Hawkes Bay Lowe Corporation rescue helicopter responded about 10.15am and found a party of four in a stream bed near the range.

The 70-year-old man, who was unable to walk, was winched out of the stream and airlifted to Hawkes Bay Fallen Soldiers' Memorial Hospital for further treatment.
