The fine weather of the weekend will continue into the start of the week, but rain and strong winds are on the way for parts of the country come Wednesday.
The high pressure system that brought lots of blue sky to the country this weekend will stick around until Tuesday, MetService said.
Make the most of the fine weather, because a frontal system with lots of rain and strong winds will move onto the South Island on Tuesday and Wednesday, meteorologist Angus Hines said.
"I recommend getting out to enjoy the weather at the start of the week, if you can," Mr Hines said.
"It will be the best many places will see for a few days."
Strong northwesterlies will pick up in the far south on Monday evening and the heaviest falls are expected in Fiordland and southern Westland on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The strongest winds are expected east of the Southern Alps and MetService may issue a warning for the heavy rain and strong wind as the front moves towards the country.
It will move over the North Island on Friday, but will weaken as it arrives.
MetService said most parts of the North Island will experience cloud and showers late Thursday and Friday.
On a good note, it looks like another fine weekend is in store.
MetService said a new ridge of high pressure looked set to build over the South Island on Friday, stretching over the North Island throughout the weekend.
This means calm and clear weather for many places next weekend.
