A man died in custody at an Auckland court this afternoon, after being found unconscious and alone in his cell.
Police have confirmed the man, aged 36, was alone in his cell at the Papakura District Court when he was found unconscious by officers around 3.45pm.
Police and ambulance staff administered CPR on the man, but he was later pronounced dead.
Counties Manukau Police district commander Superintendent John Tims said there would be a "robust and thorough investigation" by police into what occurred.
"The incident was a tragedy and we extend our deepest sympathies to the family."
He expected that the Independent Police Conduct Authority would also conduct its own investigation.
The man was in custody on active charges of kidnapping, injuring with intent to injure and male assaults female.
He was arrested this morning for breaching bail conditions which related to his active charges, and had appeared in court today.
A post mortem would be conducted to establish the cause of death.
A Ministry of Justice spokesman confirmed the death but said officials were unable to comment further as police were investigating.
Police said preliminary inquiries indicated there were no suspicious circumstances and the Coroner has been advised.
