A woman had to be rescued from the Tongariro Alpine Crossing yesterday after breaking her ankle.
The Taupo-based Greenlea Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to the crossing, to a woman in her 50s who had slipped over and fractured her ankle near the Emerald lakes.
She was unable to walk due to her injury, and because of her remote location needed to be assisted by the helicopter.
She was flown to Rotorua Hospital.
