A 24-year-old woman has died after being hit by a car in Wellington in the early hours of this morning.

Central police communications centre shift commander Sergeant Andy Dow said police were called to the scene on Vivian St around 1.40am this morning.

The woman died shortly afterwards in hospital, he said.

The Serious Crash Unit was investigating and the driver of the car was assisting police with their inquiries.

Diversions were in place near the scene - Vivian Street between Taranaki and Tory St.

Police were informing the woman's family members and next of kin. No further details were immediately available, Mr Dow said.
