A car has crashed, injuring three people, during a police pursuit through Palmerston North this afternoon.

Police said officers began pursuing a Subaru after seeing it being driven dangerously just before 1.30pm.

The car hit a Mazda as it overtook a bus then caught on fire. The two occupants of the Subaru were able to get out but the three people in the Mazda had to be rescued from their car by firefighters.

They were all injured and were taken to Palmerston North Hospital. Their conditions were unknown at this stage.

The driver of the Subaru was arrested and taken into custody while the passenger was questioned and released, police said.

Police were speaking to witnesses and the serious crash unit was at the scene.
