Mall roads clogged by holiday shoppers

There might be bargains to be had during the Boxing Day sales today, but drivers will need to to ride out long delays if they hope to find them.

NZ Transport Agency spokesman Anthony Frith said the highway network in and out of Auckland were relatively free-flowing but the roads around the shopping malls were busy and frustrating.

"Around Sylvia Park, it is extremely congested. People travelling there, particularly this afternoon, they are in for a long delay.

"People might want to think about maybe doing their shopping tomorrow or the next day. And even if travelling tomorrow, just be prepared for delays.''

Other than shopping-related delays, traffic was mostly okay, he said.

Drivers should be patient if they needed to shop today. Elsewhere on the roads, he said people should take care on slippery surfaces and take their time.
