Update: Firefighters battling scrub fire in Hokianga

UPDATE 2.30pm: Firefighters with the help of helicopters, have contained a fire that was threatening a Whirinaki home in Vujcich Rd.

Crews remain at the scene and continue to extinguish the blaze. Police have also been called to the rural scene.

Firefighters are battling a scrub fire in the Hokianga that is threatening a house.

Two helicopters were due to arrive at Whirinaki, 45km west of Kaikohe, about 12.40pm to help the ground crews.

The house is about 50 metres away from the fire front. Rawene firefighters were attacking one side of the fire while another crew from Kaikohe worked on the other.

An Omapere crew were establishing a landing pad for the helicopter to use monsoon buckets. The size of the fire is estimated to be five acres.
