Study busts beneficiary myth

A study is blowing the stereotype of sickness beneficiaries who rort the system - out of the water.

Massey University has found those with a spinal cord injury who are covered by ACC are more likely to get back to work.

But those who don't receive assistance start a downward spiral into poverty.

Sarah Derrett says the majority of those receiving ACC want to get back to work, and there are systems in place to make sure that happens.

"I think it's really time to dispel this myth about people who are in receipt of earnings-related compensation on ACC being on some sort of easy ride...It's just not the case."
