Police are hunting for a man who attacked and sexually violated an 87-year-old Hastings woman in her home yesterday.
Police said in a statement this morning that the elderly victim was accosted by the man as she checked her mailbox on Ikanui Rd near the intersection with Frimley Oaks at about midday yesterday. He dragged her back into her house before subjecting her to a serious sexual assault.
The victim sustained injuries and was discovered by a family member at her home in a distressed state shortly before 5.30pm.
Police were called and an investigation commenced. The victim has received medical treatment and a full scene examination will be undertaken today, the statement said.
Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Greig said police were naturally very concerned at the nature of the alleged offending involved.
"Limited information is presently available about the alleged offender, and at this stage he has only been described as a male with dark skin wearing a green hoodie or similar clothing." Mr McCarthy said.
Police are seeking sightings of anyone matching this description seen in the Frimley area over the past few days, and in particular sightings of this male in the Ikanui Road/Frimley Oaks area yesterday.
Anyone with information should contact Hastings police on 06 8310700. Alternatively, information can be left anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
