Mark Lundy's first night of freedom was met with a hail of vitriolic abuse and a shower of rain.

Lundy, who had murder convictions for killing his wife, Christine and daughter Amber, quashed on appeal by the Privy Council on Monday, arrived at his bail address around 5.45pm today (Friday) looking relaxed.

He had been driven from Rangipo Prison by one of his bail hosts, following the granting of a bail application this afternoon in the High Court in Wellington.

When the two men arrived at the house, Lundy calmly got out of the car and without acknowledging media waiting on the footpath, went and gave a woman a long hug before walking inside the house.

His host spoke briefly to media and asked for them to be given privacy.

"We're pretty happy..Mark's happy, he's good ...'', he said.

"We'll be having dinner tonight ...'' he said before rubbing his stomach and saying "pork belly''.

"We'll be staying home all weekend. Please guys, we like you to respect our privacy.

"A few of the neighbours might be upset, but we can't help that.''

As he was explaining, a neighbour from across the street came out of her house and yelled ``I'm furious, f****n furious'', at the host.

"Read the decision'' he responded.

Later, the neighbour said she was ``absolutely sickened and shocked'' Lundy had been bailed to the address. Other neighbours shared her views, she said.

She said she had rung the local district council and police but had been told there was nothing they could do to reverse the decision to have Lundy bailed to the property.

She did not know the people who lived at the bail address, except to wave when she saw them, she said.

"It's happened so fast ... we were never told this was where he was going.''

She had found out when a friend texted her late this afternoon.
