However, Mr Wharepouri said Murphy did require help in understanding court processes.
Asked by Judge Gibson whether he wished to deny the charges, Murphy replied: "I don't want to answer that question at the moment.''
Judge Gibson: "Do you plead not guilty?''
Murphy: "I'm just maintaining common ground at the moment.''
Judge Gibson appointed Mr Wharepouri as an amicus curiae to provide Murphy with legal advice in his case.
"He will assist you in the way you have indicated to the court that you need assistance.''
He was remanded in custody to appear again in October.
In earlier appearances, Murphy refused to confirm his identity, and asked that the court refer to him as Rangatira Wiremu John Murphy.
