Council wants to provide 55,000 new houses south of Auckland.
Farm paddocks are not there to sprout houses, Franklin Local Board chairman Andy Baker told a meeting to wrap up the new planning rulebook for the city this morning.
Mr Baker was speaking on a discussion about a 'rural urban boundary' in the south, where the council wants to provide
55,000 new houses in the planning rulebook, or Unitary Plan.
He said he had listened to people wanting to water down densities in urban areas of Auckland over several days, but said the net impact would be sprawl in rural areas.
Areas like Weymouth, where there was strong opposition to a bridge linking it to Karaka, would be developed earlier than planned, Mr Baker said.
The Franklin Local Board is happy with the southern RUB, that will seen more housing in towns like Pukekohe and preserving the area's most fertile soils which grow vegetables.
