A man has died after being found unconscious part way down a bank in Ohakune early this morning.

Inspector Marty Parker, of police central communications, said it was thought the man had been involved at an incident at a local bar earlier in the night.

It appeared he had walked along a poorly-lit area and jumped over a deer fence which had a drop of about 8 metres on the other side.

He was found unconscious part way down the bank about 1.15am.

Emergency services initiated CPR but the man died at the scene.

Mr Parker said he was not a local.

The matter has been referred to the coroner.
