Brendan Horan looked more Borat than Beehive when he stepped out in this shocking pink ensemble during a lifesaving event at Mt Maunganui.

The MP was competing in the masters section of the New Zealand Surf Lifesaving Championships yesterday.

His take on beach style was rounded off with red budgie-smugglers and a red and white surf cap - ensuring he would be easily spotted in the surf.

Mr Horan weighed in third out of 11 competitors in the 50-59 age group for run-swim-run, third in the double ski and fifth in the surf race.

Offers by his representatives to present medals in other events were declined by organisers.

Mr Horan is now an independent MP after being given the pink slip by former boss, NZ First's Winston Peters, over allegations he had taken money from his dying mother's bank account.

Mr Horan denies he took the money.
