Minister to decide on Milford-Dart tunnel

A mountain club says allowing the new Conservation Minister to make the decision over a Fiordland Tunnel has started to dig the Department of Conservation out of the hole it dug itself into.

The plan for the Milford-Dart tunnel and Fiordland Link Experience monorail has been controversial and now those who want the applications thrown out have hope that will happen.

Federated Mountain Club president Robin McNeill says they're confident Minister Dr Nick Smith will review the evidence objectively and see for himself the process is flawed.

He says the applications do not stack up economically and they will wreck the renowned Routeburn Track.

The Club has already pledged $15,000 toward a judicial review of the project if it is approved.
