A Southland man is confident in his bid to rename a Fiordland mountain after a popular author.

Aaron Nicholson wants the currently unnamed peak to be called Mt Tolkien, after The Hobbit and Lord of The Rings author JRR Tolkien.

It briefly featured in a Lord of The Rings film.

Mr Nicholson's proposal is now with the New Zealand Geographic Board.

He says if he can gather enough public support, he's pretty confidence of his chances.

"I've had a couple of peaks named here after famous New Zealand astronomers, and a couple of mountains.

"They had a lot of support from people in the universities, so I think that went a long way to helping."
