Reports of a peeping Tom in Tauranga have police warning people to be aware of what is outside their window.

Senior Sergeant Cam Anderson said police were called to an incident on Te Hono St, Mangatapu last night.

A man who was of a stocky build and wearing a red checkered shirt was seen peeping in a bedroom window and "may have been doing other things while looking in", Mr Anderson said.

"We want people to be aware of what's outside their window when they are undressing or changing and call police straight away if they see anything or anyone outside their window."

It was the first report of this type of offending in quite some time.

"We want to keep the public aware of it and nip it in the bud before we see any more."
