Auckland marathon: Areas for drivers to avoid

The 2012 adidas Auckland Marathon is taking place today and will impact on traffic and public transport.

Here's what you need to know:

The event incorporates a full marathon, a half marathon, a quarter marathon, a 5km challenge and a kids marathon.

The marathon and half marathon start in Devonport, while the other races start in the Auckland CBD.

The following road closures and parking restrictions will be in place today. These closures apply to all except authorised and emergency vehicles.

Road closures

Full road closures for Sunday, 28 October unless otherwise stated:

Auckland Harbour Bridge and motorway:

State Highway 1 northern motorway between 4am and 10.30am, including Curran Street on-ramp northbound, Stafford Road off-ramp northbound, Onewa Road off-ramp northbound, Northcote Interchange northbound and Northcote Interchange southbound.

These closures apply to the northbound clip-on lanes (lanes 1 and 2) of the Auckland Harbour Bridge only. All other lanes on the bridge will be open to traffic.

Devonport:

King Edwards Parade (from Victoria Road to Church Street), between 3am and 7.30am.

Church Street, between 5.00am and 7.45am.

Vauxhall Road, Hamana Street, Seacliffe Avenue and Winscombe Street, between 4.30am and 7.45am.

Lake Road eastern side (from Winscombe Street to Esmonde Road), partial closure between 4.30am and 8.15am.

Takapuna

Lake Road western side (from Esmonde Road to Bracken Avenue), between 4.30am and 8.15am.

Bracken Avenue (from Lake Road to Burns Avenue), between 4.30am and 8.15am.

Burns Avenue (from Bracken Avenue to Esmonde Road) between 4.30am - 8.20am.

Burns Avenue western side (from Bracken Avenue to Anzac Street), partial closure between 4.30am and 8.20am.

Anzac Street south side (from Burns Avenue to Taharoto Road), Taharoto Road west side (from Anzac Street to Northcote Road), Northcote Road south side (from Taharoto Road to Lake Road), partial closures between 4.30am and 8.30am.

Birkenhead / Northcote

Northcote Road south side (from Taharoto Road to Lake Road), partial closure between 4.30am and 8.45am.

Lake Road south side (from Northcote Road to Raleigh/Exmouth Roads), partial closure 4.30am and 8.45am.

Lake Road south side (from Raleigh/Exmouth roads to Onewa Road), Onewa Road (from Queen Street and Sylvan Avenue), Queen Street south side (from Onewa Road to Stafford Road), partial closure between 4.30am and 9.30am.

Stafford Road (from Queen Street to the motorway), between 4.45am and 9.30am.

St Marys Bay and Westhaven

Curran Street (from Jervois Road to Westhaven Drive) and Sarsfield Street (between from Hamilton Road to Shelly Beach Road), between 4am and 11am.

Westhaven Drive (partially between Curran Street and Beaumont Street), between 4am and 11am.

Wynyard Quarter, Victoria Park and Viaduct Harbour

Beaumont Street (from Fanshawe Street to Jellicoe Street), between 3am and 11.30am.

Hamer Street and Brigham Street (from Jellicoe Street), Daldy Street (from Jellicoe Street to Madden Street and from Fanshawe Street to Pakenham Street), Madden Street (from Beaumont Street to Halsey Street) and Pakenham Street (from Beaumont Street to Halsey Street), between 3am and 11.30am.

Halsey Street (from Jellicoe Street to Gaunt Street), between 9pm Saturday 27 October and 11.30am Sunday 28 October.

Halsey Street (from Gaunt Street to Fanshawe Street), between 1am and 1pm.

Gaunt Street southern side (from Beaumont Street to Halsey Street), between 9 pm Saturday 27 October - 11.30am Sunday 28 October.

Gaunt Street northern side (from Beaumont Street to Halsey Street), between 1am and 11.30am.

Fanshawe Street southern side (from Beaumont Street to Halsey Street), between 1am and 2pm.

Fanshawe Street northern side (from Beaumont Street to Halsey Street), between 3am and 2pm.

Viaduct Harbour Avenue (from Halsey Street to Customs Street West), between 8pm Saturday 27 October and 1pm Sunday 28 October.

CBD and Mechanics Bay

Customs Street West (from Viaduct harbour Avenue to Lower Hobson Street), between 8pm Saturday 27 October and 1pm Sunday 28 October.

Sturdee Street northern lanes (from Market Lane to Customs Street West), between 3am and 1pm.

Lower Hobson Street western side (from Sturdee Street to Quay Street), between 3am and 11.30am.

Quay Street northern lane and car parking lane (from Lower Hobson Street), between 4am and 11.30am.

Orakei, Mission Bay, Kohimarama and St Heliers

Tamaki Drive (between The Strand and Ngapipi Road), between 5am and 11am.

Tamaki Drive (partially between Ngapipi Road and Maheke Street), between 4am and 11.30am.

Parking restrictions

Parking is prohibited in the following areas. Vehicles parked in these locations may be towed.

North Shore

Victoria Street (on the water side only between King Edward Parade and the wharf)
King Edward Parade (both sides between Victoria Street and Church Street)
Lake Road (both sides between St Leonards Road and Winscombe Street)
Lake Road (east side only between Oceanview Road and Onewa Road)
Queen Street (east side only between Onewa Road and Stafford Road).

Ponsonby

Sarsfield Street (both sides between Curran Street and Shelly Beach Road)
Emmett Street (south side).

CBD

Beaumont Street (west side between Westhaven Drive and Jellicoe Street and east side between Gaunt Street and Jellicoe Street)
Curran Street (both sides between Sarsfield Street and Westhaven Drive)
Hamer Street (west side between Jellicoe Street and Brigham Street)
Brigham Street (west side between Hamer Street and Jellicoe Street)
Jellicoe Street (east side between Brigham Street and Halsey Street)
Daldy Street (both sides between Jellicoe Street and Madden Street)

Public Transport

Due to traffic congestion on the North Shore from participants accessing the start line in Devonport and as public transport will be operating on a Sunday timetable, Auckland Transport strongly recommends that you consider utilising the pre-race services of the ferry or bus to get to the Marathon and Half Marathon start.
