Emergency services have attended three fires in Christchurch overnight, which are believed to be suspicious.

Crews were alerted to a blaze at a property in Jollie Street in Kaiapoi, north Canterbury just before 1am.

The fire was well involved when firefighters arrived and "there was potential for it to spread to adjoining properties", said Southern Fire Communications shift manager Lyn Crosson.

The house was gutted by the fire, which is being treated as suspicious.

Thirty minutes later a large garage was extensively damaged in Ruru Rd in Linwood, in another suspicious blaze.

At 3.35, crews were called to a fire at a two-storey house in banks Ave in the southern suburb of Sydenham.

No one was inside any of the properties. Fire safety officers are investigating the causes.

In a further fire, a Gloucester St property in Porirua was damaged overnight.
