Police have been out catching drink drivers in a sting named Operation Christopher.
Officers breathalysed motorists on State Highway 1 south of Auckland as they entered the Waikato District on Friday night.
"We've noticed frequently that people finish work in Auckland and drive into Waikato having consumed alcohol after finishing work," Sergeant John Stapleford told NZHerald.com.
Operation Christopher also aims to crack down on other offences such as drug driving, drug use, burglary and theft.
"We get quite a few stolen goods and vehicles coming down here," said Mr Stapleford.
Police also set up an ANPL - automatic number place recognition system, that displays real time data about every car that passes.
The system gives an alert if the vehicle has been stolen or used in any sort of crime. If something shows up officers are then dispatched to pull over the vehicle.
