A police car was rammed three times by a ute in a high-speed pursuit on Auckland's North Shore this morning.

The pursuit began after police were called to a reported theft at a Glenfield address about 7.30am.

The ute's driver, described as a white man in his 30s or early 40s, rammed the vehicle into a police car three times before fleeing to Lincoln Rd, Henderson.

Police tried to stop the vehicle with road spikes but the ute's driver swerved the vehicle into oncoming traffic, hitting another car.

Nobody was injured but police decided to abandon the chase.

Police have appealed for help finding the ute, which had a false number plate taken from another vehicle.

It is described as a white double-cab ute with four doors, similar to a Toyota Hilux or Mitsubishi L200/Triton.

It had a white fibreglass canopy on the back and large black-rimmed wheels, possibly mags.

The ute appeared to be a contractor's vehicle, with sign-writing on the doors and an orange flashing light on the roof.

Police said it may have been stolen or on loan to a staff member for the weekend.
