Police are investigating how a Porirua man died after he went missing on a walk in the Tararua ranges.

A search was launched after Vaughn Solomon, 40, failed to return to his Whitby home after he went for a walk in the Tauherenikau Valley on Monday.

His body was found in the the Smiths Creek area of the lower Tararuas this morning.

Wellington search and rescue head Acting Sergeant Anthony Harmer said the body had not been formally identified but Mr Solomon's family had been informed.

It was not yet known how Mr Solomon died but the death was not believed to be suspicious.

"That whole part of the Tararuas has varying terrain - steep banks and sorts of terrain. I really can't speculate at the moment on circumstances,'' Mr Harmer told APNZ.

Mr Solomon's family has asked for privacy.

Mr Harmer thanked the search and rescue volunteers and teams from Levin and Wairarapa who assisted police in the search.
