A 49-year-old is in a critical condition in Waikato Hospital with serious head injuries following a violent attack in Tauranga early yesterday morning.
Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Turner said police found Russell William Munday, 49, on Devonport Road between Elizabeth Street and First Avenue, around 4.50 am.
Mr Munday's head injuries are considered life-threatening, Mr Turner said.
He said police are keen to speak to any people, whether pedestrians or in vehicles, who were in the Devonport Road area between Elizabeth Street and Second Avenue between 2.30am and 5am.
Police are working to identify people in this area from CCTV footage and Mr Turner encouraged those persons to contact the Tauranga Police.
Anyone who saw Mr Munday, described as a male Maori of slim to medium build, aged 49, wearing a dark cap, sunglasses, and dark clothing in the Tauranga CBD yesterday morning, or has found something that may have been used as a weapon, is also encouraged to contact the Tauranga Police.
