Today's a milestone one for Rena's oil response team following the ship's grounding just over six weeks ago.

They're planning to release around 60 little blue penguins at Mount Maunganui at 10am.

The birds were rescued from the path of the oil that leaked from the wreck.

Staff at the oiled wildlife facility have been giving the penguins final health checks and micro-chipping the birds in preparation for their release.
