Police have named a man killed in a car crash that exploded into an inferno in South Auckland on Friday night.

James Sinclair, 43, was killed in a crash after his 1995 Isuzu Bighorn veered off Ararimu Rd in Ramarama shortly after 9.30pm, landing on a steep bank.

The car ignited into a blaze which spread to the surrounding hillside and left Mr Sinclair almost unrecognisable.

Surrounding vegetation was destroyed by the fire.

Mr Sinclair lived in the area of the crash, and had reportedly been returning from a dinner party.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the fatal car crash or anyone who saw the Isuzu Bighorn before the crash.
