Police are appealing for help in finding out how a 20-year-old man suffered serious injuries in Christchurch on Friday night.
The man was found on a street and had internal injuries.
He may have been attacked or been hit by a car. He was in intensive care today, and hiscondition was described as critical.
The man was found on Griffiths Avenue in the suburb of Linwood about 10.30pm, said Detective Senior Sergeant David Harvey.
Police have been conducting a scene examination and wanted to hear from anyone who may have seen a vehicle travelling at speed in the area around the time.
